Summer 2002 Classes

Sunday Morning Adult Classes

Basic Christian Principles
Bill Betts and Robert McCants - Room 307

This is for new Christians or just anyone desiring a review of foundational principles. The class is ongoing and you may begin at any time. It is based on scripture with discussion following.

Heart to Heart
Gary Brown - Room 301/303

The focus of this class will be upon "one-way relationships". Are you in one? Do you always seem to love or give more than you get in return? Issues of codependency, anger, fear, among others, will be discussed. The class will be closed after the second week in order to foster openness among members.

How To Read The Bible for All It's Worth Class Material Class Audio
Richard Thompson - Fails Watson Hall

The goal of this class will be to expose class members to a different way of thinking about biblical interpretation. The goal of the teacher will be to compare and contrast the different approaches to interpretation and the resultant outcomes. Passages of scripture which have been the subject of controversy and which at times form the basis of directions for the Brooks Avenue congregation will be discussed from the perspective of the collective interpretation of the elders at Brooks. Following an introduction to different approaches to interpretation, sections of scripture will be reviewed in light of interpretative principles, such as the epistles, the prophets, the gospels and the psalms.

Sunday Evening Adult Classes

Lessons from Mayberry
Eddie Woodhouse and Stan Atwood - Fails Watson Hall
Begins June 9

Inspired by reruns from the Andy Griffith Show, LESSONS FROM MAYBERRY is an upbeat, relaxed, and informal look at relationships, morality, and responsibility. Each week, after viewing a specific episode of the show, the audience will explore how our actions, decisions, and behavior have a direct influence on others. Door prizes and surprises are planned each week, with a "down home" ice cream social to follow. What a great way for your family and your neighbors to spend 59 minutes each Sunday evening this summer!

Lessons include:

Man in a Hurry
Andy Forecloses
Opie and the Spoiled Kid
Mr. McBeeVee

... and more!

Wednesday Evening Adult Classes

Divorce Care
Kevin Savage, Rick Holland and Amy Savage - Room 307

This is an ongoing class for both men and women who have experienced the pain of divorce. It is a much needed class for both Christians and non-Christians or from other churches. Think about your friends and whoever else might benefit from this outreach. The class meets from 7 – 8:30pm. The class is free.

II Corinthians
Lindsey Garmon - Fails Watson Hall

Paul loved the Corinthian church, yet in this ancient city, he seems to have had bitter enemies who dogged his steps constantly and undermined his ministry continually. In this letter, we are able to see how Paul made it in the hard times of life! He tells what it is like to stand on the mountaintop of victory! Yet he also writes about a time in his life when he was under such great pressure that he faced great despair! He experienced it all – the joy of victory and the agony of defeat. This letter, more than others written by Paul, allows us to see what went on at the feeling level of this great missionary. He writes from his heart! He expressed his deep feelings. If you are going through tough times and need some helpful insights that will enable you to cope and overcome, a study of this letter will make a difference.
